From personal experience I can confirm that pollution in Beijing has substantially improved during the past 18 months or so; but it's still far worse than even the most polluted areas in Zurich or Geneva. And if it's really smoggy, people try to avoid going out as much as possible; that's of course bad for retail and restaurant business.
