It took thousands of hours and 12 years to create the perfect hack? Is that the effort which the original hacker also put in to hack the room and steal the computer? I think not. It was most likely an inside job, even if it didn't involved the cleaner. Look at how easy the front desk makes a copy of the room key when it is lost, misplaced or locked in the room. In a busy hotel, even a stranger could walk in and have a key made by providing a name and a room number. I have never before shown any form of identity and the front desk is so willing to oblige.
